Exploring Mechanisms You Developed to Survive Your Family - Mimicry
Mimicking
When you were a child you probably remember swearing to the universe that when you grew up you’d never, ever treat your children the way your parents treated you. You’d be different; you’d be better. You knew it from the core of your being. Right? So how is it that instead of making your vow come true, all these years later you’ve ended up copying their very qualities that you most despised? Welcome to the world of mimicking—the third mechanism (accommodation and rebellion being the other two)
we sometimes use that’s influenced by guilt toward your parents and siblings.
Why do we use “mimicking”? What are the reasons behind this behavior? Remember the warning “I hope your children do to you what you’ve done to me”? You were blamed for your parents’ suffering, and they wanted you to suffer the same way at the hands of your children. And so you do. Four reasons explain why.
MIMICKING: PUNISHMENT AND RELIEF
We become like our parents to punish ourselves and relieve our guilt for hurting them. If you think you’re responsible for causing your parents’ unhappiness, suffering, disappointment, getting out of control, then you deserve to be punished by having the same faults. Huh? Think of it like this, if you are unhappy, suffer, are disappointed, or out of control, then you have paid yourself back for the suffering you caused them. Think of the biblical expression, “an eye for an eye.” This requires that a punishment fit the crime exactly. It turns out that your conscience operates the same way. It requires that you be punished exactly in the way you’ve made another person suffer; in this case, your parents or sibling.
When your overprotective parent became frantic with worry when you played sports, you felt responsible for causing their worry. They screamed with anxiety, “You’ll break your leg! You’ll get killed!” And how does your conscience operate? It requires your becoming frantic with worry when your kids are playing, just as your parents did with you. There. Now you’ve been punished for your long-ago offense of causing your parents to feel frantic with worry over you.
Remember the indigenous tribe described in Chapter 1? Remember how they blamed themselves for earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, and so on? A child blames him- or herself when a parent continually acts badly. Later on in life, being like that parent keeps the grown child from feeling better off than the parent. This is how our conscience evens the score.
If you blame yourself for the explosive rages your domineering, overbearing father suffered when you didn’t submit to him, you’d assume that your independent attitude was responsible. You could do penance for your guilt toward him by becoming domineering with others and explosive with your own children. Why is this “penance”? Because by mimicking your father, you also suffer when your children act independently of you.
Does this sound self-destructive? It is. Surely, you’d prefer to not fly off the handle and rail at your children. And just as surely you’d rather not suffer when they don’t submit to you. But the idea is that if you caused your parents or siblings to suffer, you deserve to suffer in the same way. It’s precisely this idea, the dynamic of self-blame, that’s central to why we behave in ways that we hate.
That explains the first of the four reasons why we choose to suffer through mimicking our parents’ behavior. Let’s look at the second reason.
MIMICKING: DON’T FEEL BAD—WE’RE IN THIS TOGETHER
If you’ve ever felt bad because you think it’s not fair to be better off than your parents, you might resort to mimicking to relieve your bad feelings. At a talk I gave, a woman told me about her experience with her obese mother. She remembered not only sitting with her during meals and snacks, but she also recalled mimicking her mother’s overeating because she thought that would comfort her mother. Her exact words were, “I felt she would feel comforted because we were in it together.” What was she really saying? “Don’t feel bad, Mom, I have the same [overeating] problem that you have.”
That’s the second reason for mimicking behaviors we hate, what’s the third?
MIMICKING: PUSHING AWAY THE PAIN
For the most part, we all want to forget our unpleasant experiences of the past and have the bad feelings associated with them fade away. This done, we can enjoy our present-day lives. Now factor this in: By mistreating others the way we’ve been mistreated, we help forget that we suffered at the hands of our parents. How does that help, you’re probably wondering?
Imagine you’ve gone through something terrible like childhood abuse. (The victim could have been you or perhaps someone else in the family.) The result is that you can’t stand thinking about it, that you want to bury the memory and never reexperience the pain of it again. The farther removed from it you get, in physical distance and in time, the safer you feel and the less likely you are to think about it. What helps you accomplish this? Being as far removed as possible from your memories of the traumatic experience. What could be farther away from that opposite position? To become the one who mistreats, not the one is mistreated.
If as an adult you act possessively toward your children, you demand underlying loyalty and overt demonstrations of love the way your parents did with you, it’ll help you forget the pain you felt when your parent was that way with you. What pain? Maybe out of loyalty to your possessive parent, you inhibited your relationships with others. Or maybe you cut off new relationships because you feared being trapped by the demands of loyalty you felt all relationships came with. Either way, you suffer. And now, as an adult, if you dominate your children, maybe you’ll forget that you yourself submitted to your own domineering parents. You don’t want to recall painful memories of having been cheated out of your own independence.
With three reasons for mimicking looked at and understood, we’re left with one more. Here’s how that one shapes our world of self-blame.
MIMICKING: WORKING HARD TO IMPROVE THE FLAW
By doing to others what was done to you, you hope to meet people who can show you how to better cope with the behavior that harmed you. That’s the basic premise, and it’s a lot to take in so let’s look at it from another angle. These new people you meet become role models for you in learning new ways of dealing with behavior that was painful or difficult for you in the past. If you think about couples you know, you’ll find that this is often true. And if you’ve ever wondered why many couples have extreme opposite personalities that often clash, you now have the answer to all your wondering. A submissive person, who gives in easily, is with a domineering partner who tends not to. Why? Each one is actually learning from the other how to improve on his or her own shortcoming.
These four reasons are why, in spite of your best intentions, you may have acquired those qualities of your parents that you hated the most. In the case of David, a smart businessman who undermined his career success, you’ll see that he did this because of his father and because he identified with some of his father’s qualities.

Fresh Inspirations: Truths to Live By
Copyright 2006 Melissa Galt
I recently spoke in Milwaukee for the Symphony Orchestra’s annual fundraising luncheon and tabletop setting auction. It was a great event, well attended by many patrons of the arts. Milwaukee has a breathtaking new addition to their art museum, a fascinating architectural history, and perhaps the largest collection of clocks on church towers and more, that I have seen. Knowing that they were interested in my heritage, particularly Frank Lloyd Wright, I created a presentation centered on three life truths. I illustrated these with great grandfather’s life, my godmother, and Mother. They are truths we can all benefit from.
Creating a Unique and Original Life In order to lead an original and unique life, we do have to think outside of the box and create our own rules and guidelines for accomplishment. The best among us always have done so, and this is one of the lasting legacies of Frank Lloyd Wright. He never played by the rules, but instead established his own path and despite the many naysayers created architecture well ahead of its time. His designs still serve as an inspiration today. Many said he couldn’t do what he in fact did. They said it wouldn’t work, wouldn’t stand the test of time, and would collapse. While many of his projects do undergo extensive renovation, the innovative concepts presented in such properties as Fallingwater and the S.C. Johnson Wax Plant are timeless and blazed a trail of originality.
The Choices We Make We are each the sum total of the choices we have made to date. If we want a new reality, we have to make new choices. After all, the very definition of insanity is to do the same thing always and expect a different result. When we change our actions, we change our results.
A perfect case in point is my Godmother, Edith Head. At age thirty she was teaching French to an all girls school in California, and because she had studied a semester abroad in Europe the school assumed she could also teach art. She in fact couldn’t draw more than stick figures but took on the task. While looking in the paper one day, she saw a contest for drawing costumes for one of the major movie studios. Borrowing her student’s sketches she entered. And won! When showing up on the first day and being asked to draw, she was found out, but her courage and presumption so captivated the designer that he took her on and the rest is history including 8 Oscars for costume design over a 50-year career.
Life is in the Living Life is in the living, not in the stuff. Stuff more often than not simply weighs us down and stands in our way. In order to move forward, to continue growing and changing, we must let things go. Those elements we keep with us must serve as inspiration and memories, not as baggage. What you bring forward is up to you.
When Mother passed some 20+ years ago now, we each had only a file folder of mementos that she had kept (I have two sisters). This was such a gift rather than what I see so often with clients and hordes of baby clothes, bronzed shoes, elementary school artwork projects most of us would soon forget, broken trophies from days gone by and too much more. Mother saved the best, the things that really counted to her and hence they mattered to us. What better gift. The most significant legacy she left was the memories of times spent together, not the stuff left behind. When you live from your heart and your mind, not by your hand and your purse, you will truly know that it is the connections and relationships that define us, not our possessions. He who dies with the most toys, still dies . . . .

Why Do We Quit?
I’ve been in my own business for over 2 years. I’m in the business of helping ours. I show them an alternative store to purchase their items. They are less expensive and you receive a check for referring others. It’s a very simple concept. Sometimes so simple it’s hard to understand.
I’ve helped many switch stores and refer others. I give them every advantage possible. I give one-on-one training. I give them all the information I’ve acquired since I started so they may pass the word around. They receive a free website with free marketing training. They have an entire team to help them succeed. That’s the point….for everyone to succeed and make money.
I realize life does get in the way. Things pop up that we have no control. That’s just life. I’ve been able to work around every life situation. That’s why I love this business. It’s very flexible and easy.
Here are the 5 top reasons I think people quit before they even start:
1. They don’t know what to do next…..
2. It is actual work….
3. We have to talk to people…
4. Our friends and family have talked us out of it…..
5. I signed up and no one was there to help……
Here are the answers to those reasons:
1. They don’t know what to do next, so they just sit there. You need to step up and ask what is next. We have a training manual ready and waiting giving you step by step instructions. It’s very simple.
2. Yes, you need to work to make your business succeed. Everything in life is work. Nothing is for free. It’s really simple to make money. You just talk and show others the difference. Easy, right?
3. Yes, we do have to talk to people. It’s just like the commercials on tv. If you don’t know it’s out there how are you supposed to buy it, do it or work it? You are just talking to others, just like you would recommend a good book or restaurant.
4. Friends and family. Boy, they know everything and they have your best interests at heart, right? That’s partly true. When I started my family didn’t give me the support I needed. I got more accusations that it was a scam and it wouldn’t work. I set out to prove them wrong. Now over 2 years later, I’m still here and I’m still making money.
5. I’ve heard people say it didn’t work because when they signed up the person disappeared. I’m not like that. I email, call and set times to get together. Our team sends out a team email everyday to keep everyone in the loop. You have to do your part too. You need to show up to our appointments.
Let me ask you….who do you think will succeed in business out of these 4 people:
- 2 have cancelled without even trying.
- 1 is ready to cancel and has not show up to any of the appointments.
- The last one has been at every team call, talked to others and has taken every step described in the training manual to get her business off the ground.
Which one did you pick? The last one! Correct!!
I admit it, I’ve thought about turning in the towel when life got in the way. But I know I will not get to where I want to be if I quit. I want to succeed in my business. So I’ve stayed, worked harder and I have a great business to show for it.
My question to you is. If you are looking for a home business and you receive one-on-one training, free website, step by step training manual, team training calls, fantastic products everyone uses that are much safer for us and our environment, how could you fail?
I’d like you to read my next article called “How do you pronounce that?”

Pets: How to Take Care of your Dog
The Bond that can come between a person and a dog can be extremely strong, especially if that bond had been strengthened living with each other for many years, I have personally cried after loosing our family dog that had been like a best friend to me from my birth till I as 15 years old, when he was hit by a car one morning.
Dogs serve many different needs for people. Some people get a dog because they are lonely and need a loyal friend or because they want a dog to protect the home. A dog that is taken good care of and given attention to regularly will give his life to help protect his home and his owner. For the blind a dog can be a pair of eyes to help them get around and for the police a dog can be an important tool and a loyal partner, with a nose that nothing can beat.
The first thing you need to know about taking care of a dog is that dogs need lots of exercise. This is the same for large dogs and small dogs. All dogs need to be let out at least once every 8 hours and should given at least a 20 minute walk to give the dog some fresh air, exercise and a chance to relieve themselves.
It is also important to play with the dog on a regular basis. This can mean going to the park on a weekend or day off and having a good game of fetch, tossing the ball around in your back yard or just wrestling on the ground with the dog, just make sure if you are ruff housing with a little dog that you don’t accidentally hurt the dog. Playing with the dog for a half hour a day, is not only good for the dogs physical health but a dig that is played with regularly is mentally healthier and less likely to become a depressed dog, it also lowers your blood pressure as well and it will form an unbreakable bond between you and your pooch, which will extend to your family if you should start having one after having the dog.
What you feed your dog is very important to the dogs continued good health. The better dog foods will be marked for what are groups the food is appropriate for. Younger dogs need certain vitamins and minerals in larger amounts then an adult dog, and the same goes for an elderly dog they need more calcium in their food to help protect their bones and joints. Feeding your dog the wrong food can stunt the dog's growth and opens the dog to a larger risk of surgery when they are older.
Just like a person a dog should be taken to the veterinarian's office every 6 months, and must receive their shots every year. Regular checkups and vaccinations will also help assure that your dog grows to be an old happy dog.

How To Relax For Five Minutes Every Day
Moms and dads need to relax, but many of us have never been taught the most efficient ways to clear the brain! Many people use their sofa and TV to help them 'switch off and relax'. In reality, television programs can suspend you in stress for hours, with depressing or thrilling storylines, violence and madness! This article will show you how to relax in just 5 short minutes.
True relaxation is achieved when all tensions and thoughts are eliminated. Inside, you are calm, peaceful, yet alert and focused. You are in control and feel the strength of just 'being'. The good news is, anyone can do it.
The aim is not to escape from stress momentarily for a 'breather', it is to develop the ability to maintain normal breathing and heart rate, so that you can stay calm and in control, in any given situation.
All you need is between 5 and 20 minutes of personal time to slip away somewhere quiet…
1. Switch off your phone, ask others not to disturb you
2. Sit or lie comfortably
3. Just as if you were switching off all the lights in a huge supermarket at the end of the day, switch off all your thoughts
4. Close your eyes - the darkness is soothing
5. Now focus on the sensation of your breathing, feel the rise and fall of your inhale and exhale, listen to the air coming in and out of your body
6. Feel how your body feels
7. Don't try to alter your breathing, it will change naturally as you sink deeper into the experience
8. If thoughts slip into your mind, gently bring your awareness back to your breathing
This is all you need to do to relax your body and mind. It's THAT simple. To really benefit you need to practise this 'breathwork' on a daily basis.
After a few days of using this simple technique, you should begin to feel the rejuvenating powers of true relaxation.
After a few months - broader benefits will become apparent - improved health, improved relationships, better concentration and memory.
But don't stop there! With practice, it is possible to achieve this feeling of peace and calm at any time, enabling you to remain focused and composed even under pressure. Staying calm in a stressful situation is like having night vision when the lights go out - you have a great advantage!

Quiz - Are You Reliable?
We all value those friends who are reliable. It also applies to family members. We do not respect anybody who is not reliable. He/she has lost our trust. In every relationship, trust is of primary importance. If you cannot rely on me, what use am I as a friend? What about you? Are you reliable? Can your friends and family members trust you? Why not quiz yourself and find out?
What do we understand by being reliable? That means that if I give a word, I will keep that. I will not break the promise and give excuses to defend myself. To be reliable is a great asset, because then others can depend on us. That increases our respect and our esteem. Does any body respect those who are not reliable?
How to become reliable? The first step towards becoming reliable is not to promise what we cannot do. We sometimes make promises because we don't want the other person to feel bad. But after we break the promise, we not only lose his/her trust but can also be responsible for damaging their interests. You need some quick funds for a short time and I promise you that I shall give you tomorrow. I fail. In the meantime, you had finalized an order thinking that I would give the funds. What shall happen to your order? You would lose your credibility. Rather if I had told you that I would not be able to do it, initially you might feel bad, but your interests will not be hurt.
The first requirement is not to promise what I we cannot deliver. The second step is to deliver what ever we promise under all circumstances. Once we establish our reliability, every body will realize that when we say no, that means no and when we say yes, that will be done. Quiz yourself about these and find out how reliable you are.

Wealth, money, mansions, jewelry, yatch, personal airplane, parties, celebrations, holidays and all that money can buy. Money brings so much comfort and beauty to life, that it has become one of the most important factor in today's world. Money is a great motivator. Without money nothing works. No food, no shelter and no clothes. Without money it is difficult to have friends. Family disowns you quickly if you have no money. If you have money , a lot of it, you will get as many friends as you wish. One great advantage of money is philanthropy.
Let us find out more about money and your attitude about it. Few of us hate people with great wealth. They call them different names and truly speaking, they envy them. Does envy and calling names help? No. That is negative. Positive is to appreciate the qualities that could help them big money. Right attitude is to learn how to earn big money. The method of earning money and how to attract more of it. What to do that brings wealth to me, should be the question and not that I don't want more money than I need to live. If you don't want, at least earn it and then donate it. Nothing stops you doing that.
Money is one of the most important factors of life. With money, one can feel independent. Fulfill many wishes and live comfortably. One can also give comfort to many others with money.

Do You Value Yourself?
We all live. We all work. We all wish to have a family, have children, retire peacefully and then pass away. Is that all in our life? What is the true value you put to your life? What are you? What do you want to achieve so that you make a difference in the world? What memories you want to leave? These are questions all of us must ask. Billions of people in the world lead a routine life and pass away. Is that enough/ Can we not do something better? How to make ourselves valuable?
We make ourselves by giving. When we make others happy, we become happy. When we do something unselfishly, we feel good. Most of the problems in our life arise because of absence of giving. Marriages are getting broken for small reasons, because neither the husband nor the wife wants to give in. Both have their demands that must be met, otherwise separation.
Every child wants admission in the best college. Every person wants the best job. Everybody wants the best comfort. All of us want. What about giving? Few of us do that and that is our problem for dissatisfaction in our own life. We are slowly losing our self-esteem because of our own behavior.
Once we begin giving, we will be rebuilding our esteem. Try to help those around you. Tolerate few nuisances. Forgive others for their faults. Don't hurt people with harsh words. Don't act in a manner that destroys a life. Contribute to the world so that the world remembers us for our goodness. All of us may not become saints, but we can surely follow in their footsteps.

Birthday Thoughts
Birthdays are generally associated with celebrations. Partying, receiving good wishes, gifts and holidaying without any care in the world. These are the main themes of everyone's birthday. But what if I am asked to talk to God on my birthday? I will speak thus:
God, thank you very much for bringing me in this world. Without your wish, I would not have been here. God, I also thank my parents for bringing me to this world with your blessings. I am especially obliged to my mother for taking my care when I was inside her body. God, I thank my father for showing me how to live in this world and being with me in my early days. God, today, I thank everyone who has played any role in helping me in my life till today. I also thank the earth, the sky, the nature and everything without which the life would be no where.
God, I also apologize to everyone today. I might have knowingly or unknowingly hurt many people in my life. I apologize to them. God, I might have done many wrong things in my life but I have also done few good things with your guidance. God, I am proud of my achievements and myself. I know that I may not get all that I want and may not reach all of my goals, but with your guidance I will try to achieve as many of them as possible. I want to contribute in a small way to make this world a better place. Please guide me about that. What should I do so that I get inner satisfaction of doing something for the society.
God, on my birthday today, I wish to remove all anger, hatred, jealousy, envy and every other negative emotion from my heart. I want to cleanse my heart and refill it with feelings of love and joy. God, please help me celebrate my birthday this way. God, Thank you.

Family – It can be very vexing to loved one’s when you are depressed. On one hand they want nothing but the best for you, but on the other they sometimes get frustrated and wonder why you can’t simply snap out of it. It can be particularly hard on children of someone with depression as it may affect their outlook on life for many years to come. Having experienced this myself, I can say definitely this the number one reason to fight your depression.
Work - Work life generally suffers when in the throws of depression. It is more difficult to concentrate and not as easy to create and maintain good professional working relationships and partnerships. Furthermore, it makes being a “Self-starter” more unlikely. Rather than moving forward, maintaining the status-quo becomes more acceptable, even if only unconsciously.
Love – The love life of a person with depression can suffer tremendously. Regardless of How much someone may profess their dedication to another person, if the other person can never see the bright side, it can wear on them. Life is short, right? Love conquers A WHOLE LOT, but it doesn’t conquer everything. Sometimes we must add internal fortitude to love to truly be invincible. Besides isn’t it better to fight, not just for you, but for this person that you love as well?
Health – University studies have proven that people who are depressed are more likely to get sick, and more likely to die of an illness than those who are content. It is in your benefit, health wise, to fight your depression as well. A recent New York Times article, citing a University study, indicated that persons who have been diagnosed as depressed have more hospital visits, and a shorter lifespan.
Prosperity – The depressed person sometimes lacks clarity of thought, and may miss golden opportunities to improve their lives if only they had been paying attention. This may be, perhaps, the most important point, since many people believe they would be happier if only this part of their life, or that part of their life, etc was different. Allowing good things to happen in your life might just give you the jump start needed to end the cycle of depression and self imposed-isolation( even if only figuratively ).
Fighting depression can help your life in many ways. In some ways, the fight in itself is also a reward. You become stronger, do better at work, have better relationships, and can focus on what is really important in life so that you can improve it, for yourself, your family, friends, and loved ones.
